Followers versus listeners
Spotify shows two numbers on an artist profile: followers, who chose to get updates, and monthly listeners, who actually played your music in the last 28 days. Bought followers raise the first number only. Your monthly listeners and streams come from real people.
Why followers still matter a little
Followers get your new releases in Release Radar, and a higher follower count makes a new artist look more established to curators and listeners checking your profile. That's the honest benefit of a modest number.
Spotify's rules
Spotify prohibits artificial streaming and can remove streams, withhold royalties or take down tracks. Follower manipulation is also against its terms. Distributors may act on suspicious activity too. Keep any follower order small and gradual, and be very careful with plays.
Playlist followers
If you curate a playlist, followers make it look established. Curators who grow real playlists do so by updating regularly, choosing a clear mood or genre and sharing on Instagram and WhatsApp.
Do they drop?
Spotify removes followers from accounts it closes. Refill options cover drops within the window.
Real growth on Spotify
Pitch unreleased songs to editorial playlists through Spotify for Artists, use Canvas videos, share pre-save links, post hook clips on Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts and collaborate with other artists.
Indian context
Many Indian listeners use JioSaavn, YouTube Music or Wynk as well as Spotify. Build a presence across platforms, especially YouTube, where most Indian independent music is discovered.
Example
A Bengaluru indie band adds 500 followers before releasing an EP. Their real listeners come from an Instagram Reel of the hook and two college-fest gigs.
Safety
Only the public artist or playlist link is needed. Never share your Spotify login.
