How desi hip-hop travels on Spotify

Indian hip-hop, from Mumbai's gully rap to Delhi's drill, Punjabi trap and Malayalam and Tamil rap, mostly reaches new listeners outside Spotify first. A verse goes viral as an Instagram Reel, a cypher gets shared on YouTube, or a beef track gets discussed on Reddit and X. Listeners then search the artist on Spotify, follow, save the track and come back. Spotify's algorithm notices those saves and repeat listens and starts pushing the track through Radio, Discover Weekly and Release Radar.

Why we don't recommend buying plays

Spotify filters artificial streams, pays nothing on them and charges distributors a fee per track when artificial streaming is significant. Distributors pass that on: they can withhold royalties, remove the release or close your account. For an independent rapper, losing a release and its streaming history to save a few thousand rupees on promotion is a bad trade. Plays also don't come with the saves and follows the algorithm looks for, so they rarely help even before Spotify filters them.

What we'd actually order

1. Artist followers, if your Spotify profile shows a few dozen followers while your Instagram has thousands. A few hundred to a thousand makes the profile look consistent when people search you. Followers don't add streams, so they carry far less risk.

2. Instagram Reel views and likes on the clips you post of each new track, especially in the first hour.

3. YouTube Shorts views on the vertical clip of the hook or the best verse.

4. Nothing that streams the track itself.

Build the release around Reels

Before release, cut three or four 15-second clips: the hook, the hardest bar, a studio moment, and a reaction from a friend hearing it for the first time. Post one a day in release week with the Spotify link sticker in stories. Use the same audio on Reels so others can use it. A single Reel that lands can bring more Spotify listeners than a month of other effort.

Collaborations and features

Features are how desi hip-hop audiences cross over. A verse from an artist in another city, or another language, puts your track in front of their listeners. Release the collaboration on both artists' profiles, and both announce it the same day.

Pitching to Spotify's editors

Pitch every new release through Spotify for Artists at least seven days before it comes out. Choose hip-hop and the right sub-genre, mention the city and language, and describe what makes the track stand out in one or two lines. Spotify India runs hip-hop editorial playlists, and even if you're not picked, every follower gets the track in Release Radar.

The scene's own playlists

Many Indian hip-hop fans run playlists by city, language or style. Find them, follow them, and send a short, polite message with your track and one line about it. Don't spam fifty curators the same text. Never pay a curator who promises streams; that's usually artificial streaming under another name.

Example: a Hyderabad rapper's single

A Telugu-English rapper from Hyderabad has 2,800 Instagram followers and 70 Spotify followers. Before his next single, he orders 500 Spotify artist followers so the profile looks consistent, then posts four Reels of the hook in release week with 3,000 views and 120 likes on each in the first hour. One Reel gets picked up by a Telugu meme page. Within a month his monthly listeners pass 4,000, every one of them real, and the track lands on a Telugu hip-hop playlist.

Budget

A sensible release budget is a few hundred rupees on followers once, then a few hundred rupees per release on Reel and Shorts views for the clips. Put anything left into a small Instagram ad aimed at hip-hop fans in your state. Top up by UPI; undelivered quantity is refunded to your wallet automatically.

What to check in Spotify for Artists

After release, check saves, the listener-to-stream ratio, top cities and where listeners came from. If most came from your profile and Instagram, the Reels are working. If a playlist is driving streams, thank the curator and pitch them the next one.

Keep your profile sharp

Use the same artist name and photo everywhere, add a short bio with your city and language, pin your newest release as your Artist Pick and add a Canvas loop to each track. A complete profile turns curious searches into follows.
