Punjabi music's two audiences
Punjabi music has one of the strongest streaming audiences of any Indian language. Listeners in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and across North India sit alongside a large diaspora in Brampton, Surrey, Southall, Birmingham, California and Melbourne. Many Punjabi artists find their Spotify top cities include Toronto and London as well as Ludhiana and Chandigarh. That diaspora streams heavily on Spotify, which makes Spotify more important for Punjabi artists than for many other Indian genres.
Where listeners discover Punjabi tracks
Most Punjabi hits break on YouTube and Instagram first: a music video premieres on YouTube, a hook becomes a Reels trend, bhangra and wedding dance videos use the audio, and listeners search the song on Spotify. Your Spotify strategy should be built around that path, not around the Spotify play count.
Why not buy plays
Spotify removes artificial streams, pays no royalties on them and charges distributors when a track has significant artificial streaming. Distributors and labels can remove the release and hold back royalties. Many Punjabi artists release through labels or label-distributors with strict terms on this. A few thousand rupees of plays can cost far more than it saves.
What we'd order
1. Spotify artist followers if your profile looks thin next to your Instagram and YouTube. Followers don't add streams.
2. YouTube views on the official music video in its first hours, kept in proportion to likes, and never on a monetised video.
3. Instagram Reel views on the hook clips and dance clips you post in release week.
4. Indian or US-targeted followers on Instagram if your audience is split between Punjab and the diaspora.
Reels trends drive Punjabi streams
Release a clean 15 to 30 second hook as a Reels audio before or on release day. Ask dancers, wedding videographers and bhangra crews to use it; many will, if the beat works. Each Reel that uses your audio links back to the song, and some of those viewers search it on Spotify.
Pitch with the diaspora in mind
When you pitch through Spotify for Artists, mention Punjabi and the sub-genre, such as bhangra, Punjabi pop or Punjabi hip-hop, and note your diaspora audience. Spotify runs Punjabi editorial playlists in India and features Punjabi music in Canada and the UK too.
Example: a Mohali singer's new track
A Mohali singer has 22,000 YouTube subscribers and a growing following in Brampton but only 300 Spotify followers. Before his next single, he orders 1,000 Spotify artist followers and adds Indian and Canadian Instagram followers to match his split audience. On release day he posts the music video on YouTube and three hook clips on Reels, and two bhangra crews in Canada use the audio. His monthly listeners rise steadily, with Toronto and Ludhiana as top cities.
Live shows and Spotify
Punjabi artists who tour the diaspora circuit see Spotify followers jump after each show. Put your Spotify QR code on stage screens and merchandise, and post a 'thank you' Reel with the Spotify link the next day.
Budget
Most independent Punjabi artists spend a few hundred to a few thousand rupees per release on Reels and YouTube views, plus followers once. Put more into a small ad campaign aimed at Punjabi music fans in India and Canada than into anything else. Top up by UPI; undelivered quantity is refunded automatically.
Check your data
In Spotify for Artists, watch top cities, saves and the share of listeners coming from your profile. If Canada or the UK is growing, plan content and shows for that audience.
